Buying a Used Car? How to Spot Hidden Hail Damage Before You Buy

Every post on this blog so far has been written for people who already own a hail-damaged vehicle. This one is for the other side of that transaction: used-car buyers in Denver and Dallas-Fort Worth who want to know what they’re actually looking at before they sign anything.

Why Hail Repair Isn’t Always Disclosed

A well-executed paintless dent repair doesn’t touch the factory paint, and if the owner never filed an insurance claim, there may be no accident record tied to the vehicle at all. That means a car can have had real hail damage, and a real repair, without it ever showing up on a standard vehicle history report. We’ve written before about why hidden hail damage is worth filing a claim over in the first place; the same subtlety that makes it easy to miss as an owner makes it easy to miss as a buyer.

What to Look For

  • Raking light. Stand at an angle to the sun, or use a flashlight held low against the panel, rather than looking straight on. We’ve covered this in more detail in why hail damage looks worse under certain lighting conditions, and the same technique works in reverse to spot a repair.
  • Check the usual panels first: roof, hood, and trunk lid take the brunt of most storms. Our guide to signs of hail damage to look for on your vehicle is a good checklist to bring with you.
  • Ask the seller directly for any repair documentation. A seller who had quality PDR work done should have paperwork, and a seller who doesn’t have any is worth a more careful look.

A Repaired Car Isn’t Necessarily a Bad Sign

A well-executed PDR repair means the factory paint and finish are still intact, which is actually a better outcome than a repainted panel from conventional bodywork. The difference between the two approaches is covered in PDR vs conventional repair methods. What matters more than whether a car was repaired is how well.

No single check is foolproof on its own, which is exactly why it’s worth combining the methods above rather than relying on just one. Raking light, a full panel-by-panel pass, and a direct question to the seller about documentation catch far more together than any one of them does alone.
